CNC Machining Materials

CNC machining is compatible with many material options.


Aluminum is known for its strength-to-weight ratio. It’s also corrosion-resistant, electrically and thermally conductive, and has good machinability for high-volume production. Using alloy 6061 in aluminum CNC machining services is one popular choice for an all-purpose alloy. It makes parts for:

  • Bicycles
  • Sporting and recreational goods
  • Vehicles

However, aluminum 6061 can’t withstand continued exposure to some chemicals and saltwater. As an alternative, 7075 has the highest strength of any aluminum alloy currently available on the commercial market. It’s ideal for aerospace equipment like frames and other applications requiring high strength.

Stainless Steel

We work with multiple stainless steel alloys, all of which have high strength and resistance capabilities against abrasion, corrosion, and distortion. Some common metals for stainless CNC machining services include:

  • 303 Stainless Steel. Offering good machinability for products like nuts, bolts, and gears due to its sulfur content, non-magnetic 303 cannot, however, be welded, heat-treated, or cold-formed.
  • 304 Stainless Steel. This rugged, all-purpose alloy has similar properties as 303, but it’s weldable. It’s a good choice for industrial and residential architecture, tanks, pipes, and kitchen items.
  • 316 Stainless Steel. Containing molybdenum for enhanced corrosion resistance, this strong alloy is a weldable, marine-grade material.
  • 17-4 Stainless Steel. Prized for its hardness, toughness, and corrosion resistance, this strong, precipitation-hardening metal with chromium, copper, and nickel content has military, aerospace, and chemical industry applications.
  • 13-8 Stainless Steel. Containing chromium, molybdenum, and nickel, 13-8 has similar strengths and applications to 17-4. It’s good for making rocket engine, missile, and airplane parts.

Carbon Steel

Given its optimal machinability and weldability properties, manufacturers often utilize Carbon Steel 1045 for products. This mild steel is stronger than the majority of stainless steel options while being more affordable. You can also heat-treat or harden it to better suit your application. It’s applicable for architectural projects but requires surface treatment to safeguard against corrosion or rust. It can craft:

  • Bolts
  • Connecting rods
  • Gears
  • Nuts
  • Shafts
  • Small mechanical components


Titanium CNC machining services are optimal for military and defense, aerospace, industrial, and other applications requiring rugged components and involving harsh environments. This is due to titanium’s durability, strength, and resistance to corrosive materials. As a biocompatible metal, it’s also applicable for manufacturing healthcare products. If your application requires an electrically conductive metal, a material with high machinability, the ability to achieve a nice polish, or a low-cost metal, however, titanium is not the best choice.
